Description: Thomas Smillie was the Smithsonian’s first photographer. He and his studio staff re-shot many of the photographs collected by the institution’s scientists, including documentation of Smithsonian-sponsored expeditions as well as images of scientific phenomena.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1843, Thomas William Smillie immigrated to the United States with his family when he five years old. After studying chemistry and medicine at Georgetown University, he took a job as a photographer at the Smithsonian Institution, where he stayed for nearly fifty years until his death in 1917. Smillie’s duties and accomplishments at the Smithsonian were vast: he documented important events and research trips, photographed the museum’s installations and specimens, created reproductions for use as printing illustrations, performed chemical experiments for Smithsonian scientific researchers, and later acted as the head and curator of the photography lab. Smillie’s documentation of each Smithsonian exhibition and installation resulted in an informal record of all of the institution’s art and artifacts. In 1913 Smillie mounted an exhibition on the history of photography to showcase the remarkable advancements that had been made in the field but which he feared had already been forgotten.

Collection: Record Unit 95- Thomas Smillie served as the first official photographer for the Smithsonian Institution from 1870 until his death in 1917. As head of the photography lab as well as its custodian, he was responsible for photographing all of the exhibits, objects, and expeditions, leaving an informal record of early Smithsonian collections.

The Smithsonian National Postal Museum, located near the U.S. Capitol, is devoted to presenting the colorful history of the nation’s mail service. Mail transported our national culture, promoted capitalism, migration, community and identity formation. It provided a communication link that encouraged the formation of like citizenry long before the birth of the Internet. These images provide a peek into this intriguing history. The Smithsonian Folklife Festival (1967-present, formerly the Festival of American Folklife) is an annual event on the National Mall. From its inception in 1967, the festival has featured performers, crafts people, and local community groups from across the country and around the world; it is a celebration of grassroots culture and occupations. This selection of images from the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections is from various years of the festival and is intended to convey the range of traditions and occupations represented. Images from early years were scanned from slides or negatives, while most images from 2002 onwards were taken with a digital camera.

hotographs included in this set come from the Anacostia Community Museum, the Smithsonian Institution Archives, and the National Museum of the American Indian. They show a range of celebrations: personal family celebrations, international celebrations of arts and industry at major world expositions, and National Powwows, the celebrations of Native American dance and song. The Smithsonian documents these events and makes the images available for study, research, and enjoyment.
